Many schools are hiring out their school sports facilities to raise funds.

School sports facilities offer a range of uses and benefits. They provide space to exercise, entertain visitors and host all types of events.

Hiring out these facilities is also an increasingly popular option to generate additional income.

This income can be re-invested back into the school to improve areas that need maintenance work or updating. Or it can go towards rising energy bills, equipment or wellbeing programmes.

“Each year, more than 50,000 local people use the school’s gym, sports hall, dance studio and floodlit artificial grass pitch.

It makes a tidy profit: the sports centre brings in more than £300,000 a year and the pitch another £40,000 to £50,000.” — (Mark Wignall, Downlands Community School — as reported in Schools Week).

An innovative approach

Lee Chapel Primary School have achieved great success when hiring out their school sports facilities to raise funds.

This is just one of a number of fundraising initiatives the school has explored over the past few years.

Headteacher, Sue Jackson, explains;

“We have funded various school improvement projects through a range of initiatives;

  • obtained capital expansion budgets when our school expanded from a two form entry to a four form entry.
  • approached private companies to donate to various improvement objectives.
  • PTA and local community have hosted many successful events to raise funds.

We also invested in Wall Art for a sports corridor to make our sports facilities more appealing to potential hirers. Thanks to the Wall Art, we’ve seen huge demand from hirers. This demand has helped us raise enough money to fund further Wall Art projects!”

Preparing your facilities

If you’re planning to hire out your school sports facilities to raise funds, they’ll need to look their best.

You might need to invest in some cosmetic updates to the surrounding areas before you begin advertising them for hire;

  • Tidy the area and remove clutter
  • Clean the windows
  • Add visual displays to the walls
  • Replace any broken equipment
  • Create opportunities for natural light to flow
